Winners announced

Cemex Förderpreis Beton Central Europe 2020

The winners of the prestigious technology and science award’s 19th edition have been determined. Reflecting the international approach of Cemex, the 2020 call for entries included Poland and the Czech Republic for the first time in addition to Germany.

Because their papers convinced the internationally composed jury in the same way, the Cemex Förderpreis Beton Central Europe 2020 has two winners:

·       Dr. Daniel Weger and

·       Dr. Venkatesh Naidu Nerella

Dr. Daniel Weger receives the award for his paper on „Additive Fertigung von Betonstrukturen mit der Selective Paste Intrusion“ ("Additive manufacturing of concrete structures with Selective Paste Intrusion") and Dr. Venkatesh Naidu Nerella for his paper „Development and characterisation of cement-based materials for extrusion-based 3D-printing“.

The building materials company Cemex endows its technology and science award with a prize money of 10,000 euros. Each of the winners will receive 5.000€.

In a multi-stage process, the international jury of experts reviewed each of the eleven entries several times and nominated six from Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic for the final round. All the works in the final round stood out for their outstanding quality. In an online consultation, the jury members decided on these two entries as the works to be awarded prizes. Cemex gratefully accepted the selection of the expert jury in an online presentation on 4 March 2021 and followed the proposal of both nominations.

“The quality of the competition entries was once again remarkably high,” says jury chairman Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rolf Breitenbücher, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, “Dr. Daniel Weger and Dr. Venkatesh Naidu Nerella entries combined everything we were looking for in this competition. Their works make a substantial contribution to the further development of concrete construction. In addition to the technical scientific aspects, both were also convincing with the description of how the main findings can be put into practice in the construction industry with special regard to Cemex's main focus.”

"We are very pleased about the professional cooperation of our international expert jury and their unanimous result. Both works selected for the Cemex Förderpreis Beton Central Europe 2020 are trendsetting for the use and further expansion of 3D concrete printing. At the same time, the technologies presented by Dr. Nerella and Dr. Weger vary in their application. From our point of view, both have the potential to change applications in concrete construction sustainably in the short or medium term," says Karsten Schubert, Director for Product Technology at Cemex in Central Europe.
